Find and Replace Text Online

Find a word, phrase or multiline passage and replace the first or every matching occurrence. Count matches before replacing, and keep your original text unchanged.

✓ Free to use ✓ No signup ✓ Processed in your browser

Literal matching only: dots, brackets and dollar signs are ordinary characters. For multiline searches, insert actual line breaks. Typing \n searches for those two literal characters.

Limits: 500,000 UTF-16 code units in the original; 10,000 in each search/replacement field; 50,000 eligible matches; and 2,000,000 UTF-16 code units in the result. Requests exceeding these limits are stopped rather than partially applied.

How to find and replace text

1. Enter your text and search

Paste the original, enter the exact text to find and add a replacement.

2. Check the matching rules

Choose case sensitivity, whole-word matching and the replacement scope.

3. Count, replace and export

Count matches if needed, create the result, then copy or download it.

Replace words and phrases without changing the original

This tool performs one literal search-and-replace operation on a separate copy of your text. Use it to update repeated labels, fix a recurring phrase or delete an exact piece of text. Every run starts from the original input, not the previous result.

Literal search and replacement

Search characters are matched literally. For example, a.b searches for a dot between a and b, not any character. Replacement text is also inserted literally: dollar-sign sequences such as $1 remain ordinary text rather than capture-group references. Regular-expression syntax is not supported in this version.

Case sensitivity

Case sensitive is enabled by default, so Cat and cat are different. Turning it off uses JavaScript’s Unicode-aware case-insensitive matching. This is not locale-specific linguistic matching and does not ignore accents, spelling differences or Unicode normalization. The replacement is inserted exactly as written; its capitalization is not adjusted to each match.

Whole-word boundaries

Whole words only accepts a match when neither neighboring character is a Unicode letter, number, combining mark or underscore. Searching for cat therefore excludes scatter and cat2. Apostrophes and hyphens count as boundaries under this rule, which is a character-based definition rather than linguistic word analysis.

First match, all matches and deletion

Find matches counts all eligible, non-overlapping occurrences. Replace the first match only changes the earliest eligible occurrence; Replace all changes every eligible occurrence. The match count still reports the full total in either scope.

Leave Replace with empty to delete matching content. Replacement runs in one pass, so text you insert is not searched again during the same operation. Searching for aa in aaa finds one non-overlapping match.

Multiline text and output review

The search and replacement fields accept actual line breaks. Other characters and spacing outside the matched sections are kept as held in the textarea. Browsers can normalize pasted line endings; this tool is not a byte-for-byte file editor.

Find matches clears any old result and counts occurrences without creating replacement output. Changes to the original or settings also clear the old result, preventing accidental copying of stale text.

Use Text Compare to inspect the original and result, or the Character Counter to check the updated length.

Privacy and local processing

This tool’s code searches and replaces text in your browser. It does not send inputs to an API or save them in browser storage. Clipboard access occurs when you request a copy, and TXT files are generated locally in UTF-8.

Your browser, extensions and other scripts on the website have their own behavior, which this tool does not control.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete a word instead of replacing it?

Yes. Enter the word in Find and leave Replace with empty. Spaces around deleted text are not automatically cleaned.

Does Find matches change the original?

No. It counts eligible occurrences only. Replace text also keeps the original unchanged and writes to the separate result box.

Does an empty search insert text between characters?

No. Empty searches are rejected. Enter at least one character, space or actual line break to search.

Does whole-word matching work with Arabic?

It recognizes Unicode letters, numbers and combining marks as word characters, including Arabic letters and diacritics. It does not analyze Arabic grammar or split attached prefixes.

Will repeated clicks keep modifying the previous result?

No. Every replacement starts from the original text. Copy the result into Original yourself if you want another operation applied to it.

Are matches highlighted in the text?

This version reports the match count and generates the replacement result without highlighting individual occurrences. Use Text Compare for a highlighted comparison.
