Remove Extra Spaces Online

Clean repeated spaces, tabs and line-edge whitespace without overwriting your original. Keep your line breaks, reduce blank lines or replace line breaks with spaces.

✓ Free to use ✓ No signup ✓ Processed in your browser

Maximum 500,000 UTF-16 code units. No input is silently truncated. Your original text stays in this box.

Output uses LF line endings. Unicode spaces are preserved unless you enable their conversion. Zero-width and directional characters are not removed.

Counts measure Unicode code points. Net removal includes deleted line breaks and line-ending normalization, not only ordinary spaces. Replacing a tab or NBSP with one space can change the text without reducing its character count.

How to remove extra spaces

1. Paste your text

Add text with repeated spaces, tabs or unwanted line-edge spacing.

2. Choose cleanup rules

Decide which spacing to clean and how to handle line breaks.

3. Review and export

Click Clean spaces, check the result, then copy or download it.

Clean text spacing with explicit controls

Copied text can contain repeated spaces, tabs and padding at the beginning or end of lines. This tool lets you clean those characters without replacing the original input. The default settings tidy ordinary spaces and tabs while keeping all line breaks.

Repeated spaces and tabs

The collapse option replaces each uninterrupted run of ordinary spaces and tabs with one ordinary space. This also converts an individual tab to a space. The line-edge option removes ordinary spaces and tabs from the start and end of each line. Disable both options if that spacing must remain intact.

Non-breaking and Unicode spaces

The optional Unicode setting converts characters in Unicode’s space-separator category, including non-breaking, narrow non-breaking, thin and ideographic spaces, to ordinary spaces before other cleanup. It is off by default because those characters can carry intentional typographic or wrapping behavior.

This option does not remove zero-width spaces, joiners, byte-order marks or bidirectional controls. The tool is a spacing cleaner, not a universal invisible-character remover.

Line breaks and blank lines

Keep all line breaks preserves their number, although line-edge cleanup can remove padding from the lines themselves. Reduce consecutive blank lines keeps at most one blank line within each run. Blank lines for these controls mean empty lines or lines containing only ordinary spaces and tabs.

Replace every line break with a space joins the text into one line. Enable the collapse option too if you want resulting runs of spaces and tabs reduced to one space. Removing outer blank lines happens before line breaks are joined.

Processing order and line endings

The tool first normalizes CRLF, CR and Unicode line separators to LF. It then applies optional Unicode-space conversion, line-edge trimming, outer-blank-line removal, the selected line-break handling and finally space-and-tab collapsing. Even with cleanup options disabled, output line endings use LF.

Review intentional formatting

Indentation, aligned columns and Markdown trailing spaces can be meaningful. Review the result before replacing formatted text or code. This tool does not parse document structure, repair PDF reading order, fix spelling or decide which line breaks belong inside paragraphs.

Use Text Compare to inspect changes, or the Character Counter to examine text length and Unicode details.

Privacy and local processing

This tool’s code processes your text inside your browser. It does not send your input to an API or save it in browser storage. Copying uses your clipboard when requested, and TXT files are generated locally in UTF-8.

Your browser, extensions and other scripts installed on this website have their own behavior, which this tool does not control.

Frequently asked questions

Will it remove every space between words?

No. The collapse option keeps one ordinary space per run. It is designed to tidy spacing rather than join all words together.

Are paragraphs preserved by default?

Yes. Keep all line breaks is selected by default. Line-edge spaces and tabs can still be removed by the separate trimming option.

Why do some unusual spaces remain?

Unicode space conversion is off by default. Enable it to convert space-separator characters such as NBSP. Zero-width and directional characters are outside this tool’s cleanup rules.

Does it change Arabic letters or accents?

No. It applies the selected whitespace operations, without changing letters, diacritics, punctuation or case. Joining and directional controls are not removed.

Why can the text change while net removal stays zero?

Converting a tab or non-breaking space to one ordinary space replaces one code point with another. Its length can remain equal even though the content differs.

Can I edit the cleaned result?

The output is read only to keep statistics consistent. Copy or download it to edit elsewhere. Changing the source or settings clears the previous result until you clean again.
